Remote-Ready   Antenna

Model 807-UL (Ultra-Light)

PHOTO:  DJ0IP

NOTE:  THERE ARE NO PLANS TO SELL THIS VERSION.

This is a special version of the 807 antenna, specifically designed for traveling hams requiring a medium power all-band antenna "as lightweight as possible."

This first unit was built specifically for the

February 2018 DX-pedition to Gambia (C5DX).

See QRZ.com for more details.

This version is identical to the Model 807-L, except it has no plastic enclosure for the balun, sparing not only the weight of the case but also the weight of the epoxy potting inside of the case.

Instead, the balun is built onto a piece of 2mm thick epoxy board (FR4) with all of the excess fat removed. (see picture)

NOTE:  THERE ARE NO PLANS TO SELL THIS VERSION.

Description:

  • The 807-UL is an ultra-lightweight version of the 807-series of Off-Center-Fed Dipole antennas, primarily foreseen for airline travel.
  • Its Coax is lightweight, but Teflon-insulated to enalbe handling 500W.
  • It used WIREMAN CQ-534 antenna wire, much thinner than the CQ-532 wire used in the "HD" version of the antenna.  This wire is no longer available in its original form.
  • It has a special Hybrid-Balun developed by DJ0IP.
  • It also uses the unique "Remote Matching Unit" (RMU) developed by DJ0IP & DF4SA.  The RMU enables setting the frequency of minimum SWR to your favorite portion of the 80m/75m band.
  • Its balun is "Open-Frame", meaning no enclosure.

Bands:

  • 80/40/20/17/15/10/6m (No Matchbox necessary)
  • 12m (SWR ~ 3.5:1 . . .  Matchbox probably necessary)
  • 30m (High SWR . . . Matchbox and reduced power required)

Power:

  • 600 Watts SSB & CW
  • Except 30m (limit: 250 Watts)

Weight:

  • About 500 grams (1lb. 1oz.) / including 9m (30 ft.) of RG-313 coax.

Overall Length:

  • About 40.7 Meters (~133 ft.)

The balun is unique and critical to the performance of this antenna.  It is a hybrid design, created by DJ0IP after 2 years of intensive research into the 80m OCFD antenna.

The two Ferroxcube Toroids are coated with a thin layer of Epoxy, making them weather-proof.  The coax as well as Teflon-Insulated Twisted Pair wire of the top Balun are also weather-proof.

The solder connections are coated with RED fingernail polish.  The color of red was chosen instead of clear polish, to enable seeing how well it covers the connections.  Fingernail polish was used because it can be easily removed with nail polish remover...in case a repair is ever necessary.

The RMU is also unique in that it enables field swapping for RMU's with more or less capacitance to lower or raise the frequency of minimum SWR.

The entire antenna is unique in that it is actually two antennas in one.

By removing the RMU and the wire beyond it, the remaining antenna becomes a 40m OCFD and is usable on 7 bands (40/20/17/15/12/10/6m).
