Aerial-51 "QUALITY"

(As implemented in the production by Spiderbeam GmbH)

"QUALITY" Begins with the Choice of Material:

  • Stainless Steel Hardware
  • Low-Loss Coax (for its size)
  • Matched-Pair Toroids in the Balun
  • Teflon-Insulated Wire in the Balun
  • Gold-Plated, Teflon Insulated PL-259
  • Insulated, Stranded Copper-Weld Wire
  • Double-Strain-Relief of Wires and Coax
  • Balun Fully Potted with 2-Component Epoxy

"QUALITY" Continues with the Proper Technology Design:

  • Feedpoint location chosen that presents a good match to the largest number of HF bands, while . . .
  • Maintaining the lowest possible level of Common-Mode-Current caused by the Feedpoint being Off-Center.
  • Balun Designed SPECIFICALLY for the Common-Mode-Current Characteristics of this specific antenna.*

* The Common-Mode-Current characteristics of OCFD antennas was determined by hundreds of hours of EXTENSIVE FIELD TESTING of various versions of OCFD antennas, errected in various configurations.

More details of this test can be found here:  CMC-TEST.

BALUN QUALITY ASSURANCE:

  • Toroids are wrapped               100 at a time.
  • Then sellected by                    "Matched-Pairs".
  • Tolerance is held to                 less than 1% variance.

According to Tom Rauch (W8JI), manufacturing variances, especially with toroids from different manufacturing batches, can vary in Permeability up    to 20%.  Our own lab measurements have confirmed this.

In a device whose job it is to maintain a balance of current flowing within the coaxial transmission line, variances of this magnitude are undesirable.

By carefully selecting matched-pair toroids, QUALITY IS ASSURED.

We don't rely on "luck" as a quality factor!

As you see, sometimes it is still important to think "inside the box".

WEATHER-PROOFING:

Each Balun Case is filled with a 2-Component slow-drying Epoxy Glue.

This keeps Moisture Out and the Quality In!
