I have personally seen it work, but that was 40 years ago when many transceivers still had tube finals with a Pi-Network output, so matching was no problem.
Today, our transmitters have transistorized finals and are often "flaky" when the impedance is not a good match. This project will investigate the viability of this design with todays radios and solid state amplifiers.
