NEWS FLASH New QRP RIG:
Simply the Best ... Better than all the Rest in its Price Class.
I operated in the 2015 QRPTTF event from the summit of Utsayantha Mountain, SOTA reference W2/GC-026, using a KX3 feeding an Aerial 51 404-UL OCF dipole.
The antenna was hung from a fire tower at a point 50ft off the ground and sloped down to a tree so that the other end was approximately 20ft off the ground.
The summit had a large clearing making it easy to hang the 67ft long antenna. I put a fair amount of tension on the antenna in order to take up the slack of the matching unit sagging in the middle, since I didn’t use a center support. The antenna wire, coax and connections all seemed surprisingly strong.
I operated on 40, 20 and 15M CW since the event was restricted to non-WARC bands. The SWR was below 1.5:1 on 40 and 15M but was 2.5-3:1 on 20M so the KX3 auto-tuner was used on 20M only.
The antenna performed quite well and subjectively the receiver sounded lively with good signal strength and relatively low noise. I finished the event with 95 QSO’s and a multiplier count of 72, consisting of states, countries and other SOTA stations contacted over the 3 bands.
I worked a large number of European and west coast QRP stations. It appears likely that my results will garner the top score in the event.

First and foremost, CONGRATULATIONS TO BARRY!
The choice of antennas and radios are important but the operator is the single most important factor in the combination it takes for a winning station. Barry is an excellent operator, so that was a great start.
We knew Barry would operate the contest using our antenna and we were all anxious for his comments and results. Needless to say, we were pleased.
Well done Barry, and thank you for your trust in Aerial-51!
